Taking Your Music to the World

The journey started way back as a child in the early 1970s when my father would take my brother and me to the Dimanche Gras’ show every year at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain. In those years the panorama champions, the calypso king and the King and Queen of bands were all decided on carnival Sunday night. My first opportunity to actually play pan came in 1978 at the Tunapuna Roman Catholic Church Youth Group, which offered as one of its youth initiatives a performing steel orchestra. Senior members of the Youth Group also played with Orange Grove Pan Symphony which was lead then by the prolific Aldwyn ‘Madman’ Jordan. So in 1979 I played in my first panorama competition with the Orange Pan Symphony. The band played a song entitled ‘War’ which was sung by calypsonian Edwin ‘Crazy’ Ayoung and arranged by Aldwyn ‘Madman’ Jordan. So therefore, it stands to reason that having been introduced to pan in the house of God who then ensured that the very next year my musical baptism, would involve playing a ‘War’ song, which was sung by a ‘Crazy’ man and arranged by a ‘Madman’. I am certain therefore, that with such an ironic beginning something special had to develop
